Long Biography
Hossam Magdy Balaha, born in Egypt in 1993, is a dedicated scholar whose academic and professional trajectory reflects a deep commitment to advancing Bioengineering, AI, and interdisciplinary translational research. He is currently a Ph.D. Candidate and Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) at the Bioengineering Department, J.B. Speed School of Engineering, University of Louisville (UofL), USA, and concurrently holds the position of Assistant Lecturer at Mansoura University, Egypt.
As a GTA at UofL, Hossam contributes significantly to both instruction and mentorship. He has taught and co-developed core graduate courses such as BE 544: Artificial Intelligence Techniques in Digital Histopathology and BE 645: Artificial Intelligence and Radiomics (Summer 2024 and Spring 2025), with all instructional resources (including lecture videos and code repositories) publicly available via YouTube and GitHub. He also supports undergraduate teaching in BE 354: Anatomy and Physiology and BE 654: Advanced Physiology. His pedagogical development is further evidenced by completion of UofL's GTA Academy (Parts I & II), Publishing Academy, and Community Engagement Academy (2024-2025).
At Mansoura University, he has instructed over 20 courses (including Computer Programming, AI, Computer Graphics, FPGA, and Multimedia) and supervised over 30 graduation projects. His contributions to education extend beyond the classroom: he has delivered numerous YouTube courses (e.g., Full Stack Web Development, IoT with Raspberry Pi), trained hundreds of students across multiple training centers, and authored The AI Starter Kit: From Data to Models with Python (Vol. 1, Amazon KDP, Dec. 2025).
Hossam's research impact is substantial: as of January 1, 2026, he holds an H‑Index of 29 with 2,031 citations (Google Scholar), and his scholarly output includes 50+ peer-reviewed works spanning high-impact journals (Nature Scientific Reports, IEEE Access, Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence, Bioengineering, Cancers, Soft Computing, etc.), 15+ conference papers (e.g., ICPR 2024, ISBI 2024-2025, ICIP 2024-2025), 5 book chapters, and 1 granted US patent on AI-based cervical vertebral maturation assessment. His work consistently emphasizes clinical translation, explainability (e.g., SHAP, EigenCAM), and multi-modal integration; applied to cancers (breast, bladder, prostate, Wilms' tumor), neurodegenerative disorders (Parkinson's, AMD), and public health challenges (e.g., anosmia in COVID-19, smart city mobility).
His excellence has been widely recognized; in 2025 alone, he was named among the Top 2% Scientists Globally (Stanford/Elsevier), received the Outstanding Graduate/Professional Student Award, Outstanding Student Employee Award, and Certificate of Nomination for Outstanding Adult Learner at UofL, and was a finalist for the Excellence in Teaching and Inclusive Excellence awards. Earlier honors include the Exemplary Research Scholarship Award (2023, 2024), Outstanding International Student Award (2024), and a Best Student Paper Award (Track 6) at ICPR 2024. He also earned APPKI Doctoral Student Exemplary Achievement and Graduate Student Inventorship awards (2025).
Complementing his research, Hossam is actively engaged in service and leadership: he serves as Vice President for Events and Activities in International OASIS, is a Graduate Student Ambassador in UofL's Graduate School, volunteers with the Cardinal Cupboard, and is a regular blood donor with the American Red Cross. His NSF I‑Corps™ training (Winter 2024) and participation in AIM‑AHEAD further underscore his commitment to responsible innovation and equity in science.
A dedicated educator and mentor, Hossam values fairness, mutual respect, and equitable opportunity in academic and professional settings. He actively fosters inclusive learning environments and supports student success through culturally responsive teaching, mentorship, and collaborative engagement across diverse backgrounds. Through sustained scholarly productivity, dedicated mentorship, and community service, he continues to make meaningful contributions across academia, industry, and society.
